Meyiwa Family Still Awaits Compensation 9 Months Later

The news of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa’s fatal shooting in October last year rocked the nation and the entire football world. But what is just as shocking is the fact that nine months later, his family has still not received the benefits of Meyiwa’s life insurance policy. The former Orlando Pirates captain left behind a young family that are in dire need of support but to date have received not a dime. His father, Samuel Meyiwa, has been taking care of his grandchild Senzo Meyiwa Compensationand his mother,Kelly Khumalo, but admitted in a recent interview that it was beginning to take its toll.

Senzo’s former employers, the Buccaneers, say they are not to blame for the seemingly endless wait for the release of the R5 million payout. They point the finger of blame at the insurance company that administers the life insurance policies of the Orlando Pirates, Delphisure Group Insurance. They in turn point to the fact that they don’t yet have a report from the police on the case.

Police spokesman Solomon Makgale says the case is still under investigation but that they have been keeping Samuel Meyiwa up to date with any progress they make. However, he regretted that details of the case given to Samuel were finding their way into the media and jeopardizing the progress of investigations. He also refuted claims that the police was not giving the case the urgency it required.Makgale shifted the blame for the unreleased compensation back to Delphisure, saying the report did not have to be produced for the claim to be processed.
